Watched The Half of It.
As far as Netflix’s extensive library of Young Adult movies goes, this is a pretty solid effort. It’s your typical Cyrano de Bergerac-inspired coming-of-age love story—though writer/director Alice Wu adds a few welcome twists to the formula. The cast is talented, the characters are likable, and the overall execution is a huge improvement over the similarly themed Sierra Burgess Is a Loser. The film’s only major flaw lies in its pacing. Even at a relatively lean 105 minutes, the plot really starts to drag towards the middle; the narrative would have benefitted from two or three fewer complications.
All in all, however, I found The Half of It to be perfectly enjoyable. It manages to strike a harmonious balance between authenticity and escapism—an impressive feat, considering its genre.
