At my brother’s insistence, I watched Top Secret! for the first time. It features exactly what you want from a Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker comedy: distinguished thespians (including Michael Gough and Peter Cushing) playing the material completely straight, seemingly oblivious to the Looney Tunes absurdity around them. A few jokes don’t quite stick the landing, but that’s to be expected when the writers are throwing literally everything at the wall. It falls short of the perfection the team achieved in Airplane! and The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!, but it’s far from the worst thing they’ve ever produced.
